When you first walk through the entrance of Brudys you are overwhelmed by a sense of size. Almost tucked away into a corner of the Centre Square Mall, the clothing store offers its customers much, despite the small area.
T-shirts, and sports shirts literally tower over you when you enter, with a wide variety of sizes available. Caps, and various adornments are also available here. The music is always on, and at most times, someone with a warm friendly smile is there to greet you.
Brudys is operated by Bruce Christensen, a 17-year-old business prodigy still attending high school. The store is managed by his mother, Bryony Tesar, and she will soon hand over the full reins of ownership.
"Its family owned and operated," explains Tesar, smiling approvingly at her son as he examines a cap, adding "Were doing very well so far."
Indeed. During the ten minute interview, the phone was always ringing. Teenagers pass through the open door frequently, pausing to chat with Bruce about when a certain item is expected in. Bryony laughs.
"Thats part of our problem. Were dependent on trends. You have to keep up with what people are wearing, whats popular and whats not. They know were here, and what we offer." .
The store initially opened in January, but didnt move to the Center Square Mall until March. Since then, its been reaping the benefits of a great location. Tesar says managing a popular store has one drawback.
"Usually, were too busy during the day to realize weve missed lunch."
"Im having fun." she says, ending a quick phone call, adding, "I get a chance to work with my kids doing something we all enjoy."
